(New Providence) Legal articles on martindale.com provide members of the profession a means to share their insights into law and business with potential clients. a study of the traits of the most popular articles reveals how firms can maximise their exposure using the legal articles tool.
While an author will write about a subject in which he or she specialises, firms do well to publish articles within particular areas of Practice. According to James Harley, international marketing director of Martindale-Hubbell, “the subject areas in which our visitors are primarily interested don’t change much, based on our recordkeeping.”* While precise rankings vary over time, the following areas appear regularly among the most-searched AOPs:
■ Administrative Law ■ Business Law ■ Corporate Law ■ Family Law ■ Finance ■ Government ■ Healthcare ■ Intellectual Property ■ Investments ■ Labor & Employment ■ Litigation ■ Real Estate As one would expect, there is a correspondence between subject areas of greatest interest and the articles which are most read. In 2006, for example, Goodrich, Riquelme y Asociados, A.C., the Mexico City firm, had the most articles read of any of the international firms. What were their subjects? Real estate, Finance, Intellectual Property and labor & employment, all subjects regularly in the top areas of practice. Another way to gauge interest is to look at which article titles garnered the most views. For instance, amongst the law firms with the most-read articles, 21 of 25 article titles include a country name, an organisation name (e.g., European Union), and/or the word ‘international.’ examples include “Benefits for Investors under the Mexico-European Union Free Trade Agreement” (from Goodrich, Riquelme y Asociados, A.C. of Mexico), “Choose your Coordinates Wisely — establishing a Business in Bermuda” (from Cox Hallett Wilkinson of Bermuda) and “New Banking Act in Tanzania” (from FK law Chambers of Tanzania). Looking over the top articles also suggests the importance of clearly stating the subject in the title. Consider “the new Commercial Courts in Spain - Domestic and International Jurisdiction” (from Monereo, Meyer & Marinel-lo Abogados, S.l. of Spain), “Incorporation in Costa Rica: types, Procedures and Fees” (from Costa Rica law Ltda. of Costa Rica) and “Buying a residential Property in Italy” (from JMU law Firm of Italy). Each title is very clear as to what one will find when reading the article. For more information on how you can publish your articles on martindale.com, contact intlcustrel@martindale.com.
