In the autumn of 2003 Martindale-Hubbell sponsored a research survey, conducted by The Brand Research Company, to determine the international usage patterns of the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory in all formats. The response base included lawyers from 850 large law firms and 978 in-house counsel.
Who uses Martindale-Hubbell?
The Martindale-Hubbell International Law Directory continues to be one of the most important sources of information for law firms and corporate law departments seeking to identify and evaluate outside counsel.
- 90% of law firm respondents and 86% of corporate counsel use Martindale-Hubbell.
Of corporate counsel respondents who use Martindale-Hubbell:
- 89% are from Fortune 1000, Fortune 200 and Fortune 100 companies.
- 87% are members of law departments with an international focus.
Increased Frequency of Use
The frequency of use of all formats of the International Law Directory (martindale.com®, print, CD-ROM and online via LexisNexis) has significantly increased since the 2000 survey. In particular, organisations with a national and international focus use the directory more frequently today than in 2000. The frequency with which legal professionals consult Martindale-Hubbell are key uses of Martindale-Hubbell. 53% of law firms and 41% of corporate counsel now use martindale.com daily or weekly.
Most Important Uses of Martindale-Hubbell
Amongst law firms and corporate counsel, identification, verification and selection of counsel were the most important uses of Martindale-Hubbell.
How Respondents Use Martindale-Hubbell
93% of corporate counsel and 98% of lawyers in private practice find Martindale-Hubbell to be useful or very useful as a validation tool during the referral process.
Sources for International Referrals
Out of 13 sources including firm brochures, preferred provider lists, firm Web sites and Chambers Global, Martindale-Hubbell was cited by corporate counsel and private practice attorneys as the top source for evaluating short lists of lawyers/firms and final selection for international referrals.

Nine out of 10 cite the following data as important or very important in the process of identifying, validating and selecting outside counsel:
Partner Biographies, lawyer practice areas, firm practice areas, firm profiles, personal and professional accomplishments, martindale ratings and education.

81% of large firms and 74% of corporate counsel respondents would be unlikely or are not sure that they would hire a law firm not listed in Martindale-Hubbell. Firms not fully represented in Martindale-Hubbell place themselves at a serious competitive disadvantage.

- 87% of corporate counsel and 90% of lawyers in private practice find martindale.com to be useful or very useful when accessing law firm Web sites.

- 97% of lawyers in private practice consider Martindale-Hubbell important/very important when providing detailed information about their firm to buyers of legal services.
Frequency of Identifying Martindale-Hubbell as a Referral Source
In situations when Martindale-Hubbell is consulted during the referral process, 65% of corporate counsel and 39% of private practice respondents rarely or never communicate the role played by the Law Directory in this process.
